What size of monitor should you go for?

Your choice of monitor size is likely to be dictated by your budget, but if money was no object then we think bigger is better! In practice, a 17 inch monitor will be fine for running standard 1024 x 768 pixel resolution, and will let you comfortably view one application window on the screen, but if your budget allows, who wouldn't be tempted by a large monitor on which you can easily have many large application windows open at once. 24 inch monitors seem to offer a good performance to price ratio at the moment.

What brands of computer monitor are popular?

Samsung, Iiyama (good for honouring warranties and providing decent replacements), Dell (great value), Acer, Philips.

What are useful features to look for in computer monitors?

HDMI input - for your Xbox.

DVI Input - The newer digital connection standard increasingly common on new computers.

VGA input - VGA is still a very popular connection type, particularly for older computers.

Low response time of 5ms if you are going to use it for gaming.

Warranty length - Worth noting when comparing different monitors.

1080p - Also known as Full HD, this means the monitor can display high definition media, e.g. Blu-ray HD movies, at the highest HD standard currently available. The 1080 represents the 1,080 horizontal lines that the monitor has, and the p is for progressive scan, which is the best scan method to have. Many 23, 24 and 27 inch LCD monitors use 1920×1200 as their native resolution and can therefore display 1080p natively (which is 1920x1080).
